To wrap up our series, meet Michael, the IT Manager at Azura. In this role, Michael is pivotal in safeguarding the credit union and its members from fraud and cyber threats. His responsibilities are diverse and encompass a wide range of crucial functions.
"I oversee and manage the organization's IT operations, systems, and infrastructure," he said. "I also handle project management, oversee and manage new branch builds, and handle security administration. Additionally, I help align technology strategies with department and organizational goals. Lastly, I coach and mentor IT employees."
In today's digital age, cybersecurity is paramount for financial institutions. Michael's contribution and commitment to proactive security measures help keep Azura's defenses ahead of potential threats.
"I implement and administer security systems on multiple levels to maintain Azura's security posture," he said. "My team also implements security measures to prevent unauthorized access or breaches. Staying up-to-date with research is a significant part of our strategy."
As a team leader, Michael emphasizes the importance of fostering a positive workplace culture—a reminder that in cybersecurity, the human element is just as critical as the technical.
"Managing the personal aspect of my role is what I enjoy most," Michael said. "Creating a positive team environment and solving problems together makes my job truly fulfilling. Team building is the key to our success."
For those considering a career in cyber security, Michael stresses the importance of continuous learning, teamwork and passion.
"Make sure you're following your passion," he said. "Don't be afraid to get specific about what you want. There are so many different paths you can go down. If you don't explore a variety of positions in the IT field, you may miss out on something unique that fuels your passion."
Michael's advice to our members regarding online safety and security is critical and cooperative.
"We take security seriously. It is highly emphasized because it doesn't take much to become compromised. The effects of a compromise can be devastating. I want people to understand why we put security measures in place. It's not to be annoying or make processes difficult. It's because it only takes one bad actor to create a serious issue."
